How long has Om Baby Pregnancy & Parenting Center been in business?

I started teaching Prenatal Yoga when I became pregnant with my son, Hayden, in 2007.  I continued teaching yoga after my maternity leave and began to seek an alternative to my full-time job that would compliment the yoga.  It has been a slow progression starting with one workshop, then leading to another.  Often adding classes and workshop that I was interested in as a naturally minded mama, but couldn’t find in the area.  One thing led to another and Om Baby was officially born in January 2009 with our first Natural Baby Workshop

What kind of classes and workshops do you offer?

Om Baby seeks to provide support from pre-conception to parenting a teen (eventually).  We offer a whole host of classes from fertility yoga, natural childbirth classes, lactation consults, parent/child classes including art, gardening, music, yoga, martial arts and more as well as parenting and natural living workshops.  Our offerings have grown tremendously since our move in March of this year.  Definitely check out our website to see all that we offer including our boutique and services too!

Who is Om Baby for and what is the mission behind Om Baby?

Om Baby is for the naturally minded parent.  The mama who wants to do the best for their child in the midst of what seems to be an ever increasing toxic world.  The papa who wants a meaningful connection with their child in a society that seems to be spinning too fast.  At it’s heart, Om Baby is for me.  Om Baby is a community of like-minded parents.  Om Baby is for you!  Om Baby believes that you should have access to comprehensive information and resources that promote toxic-free and earth-friendly parenting even before the birth of your child.  Creating a community that supports you through the journey of parenting and helps you find the answers that are right for you and your family.

Can you give us some insight on what made you start Om Baby?

The insemination of Om Baby certainly began with the presence of my son.  After 2 years of trying to conceive, we finally became pregnant in 2007.  An event that has certainly changed my life in many ways.  Without Hayden, there would not have been Om Baby.  I am the type of person (yes, Type A) that needs to know everything when plunging into something new.  Well parenthood, was certainly a new frontier and no different in my approach to tackle the mountain of information out there on the topic.  Throughout my pregnancy, I became more and more focused on the natural birth and natural parenting and really began to tune in to the strength, amazement and spirit in what it means to be a woman, a mother, a creator of life.  Much of what I found in mainstream birthing was missing this aspect and so I felt a need to create Om Baby to fill the gap.

How long have you been teaching yoga?

I started teaching Ashtanga yoga at Be Fit Mind & Body Yoga studio in 2005, mentoring through the owner, Bobbi Misiti.  I’ve been teaching Prenatal Yoga since I became pregnant with my son in 2007 and Baby & Toddler Yoga is a more recent addition last year.  I’ll be starting to teach Fertility Yoga this summer and adding a Children’s Yoga class this Fall.  Yoga has been a passion for me since my very first class in 2002.  I’ve seen the benefits in mind and body and also seen just how beneficial it is as I have less time to do my own practice as the business grows.

What has been the best part for you since you started Om Baby?

Meeting all the wonderful people in the area.  It’s made me more aware of my community, more connected and more of an advocate for grassroots programs and local businesses as well.

Can you tell us something about yourself that people would be surprised to know?

Hmmm, that’s a hard one.  I think the thing most people are surprised to hear these days is that I also have a full-time job on top of all the I do at Om Baby.  It’s been a challenge to accomplish it all and most days, I don’t.  It’s been an interesting juggling act, but knowing the benefits that Om Baby is providing to families and the community keeps me going.

Anything special for Om Baby coming up this summer you would like to share?

I’m especially proud of our collaboration this summer with Wooden Hill Farms.  They’ve been providing awesome Little Gardeners classes on-site at their farm.  The classes are so fun and it’s always a joy to visit them and see the kids dig in the dirt and connect with nature.  Starting in July, I’m also very excited to offer a Mindful Parenting Support Group meetings led by Joshua O’Brien, founder of the Meditation Community of Central Pennsylvania.  You get the opportunity to ask questions about how to be mindful in your everyday practice of parenting and also practice those skills with your children present at the meeting.;-)  In late August, we are also working on a Summer Science Camp led by Kathy Eckhaus of Music Together in Susquehanna Valley.  Therapist, Pam Moran will be presenting a workshop All About Sleep…  a common topic of concern for many parents with young children.  We’ve added some fun and creative workshops too like BellyCasting and First Impressions where you create and decorate ceramic print keepsakes for your child (a great idea for early Christmas gifts!)  In August we’ll also be having a picnic social and kid’s movie night at Om Baby on August 7th.  Hope you can come check us out, bring a friend and enjoy a fun, relaxing time with the family!

I have loved classes at Om Baby for my 4 year old. Mrs. Farrell’s art for kids has been great. If it weren’t for that, I wouldn’t know about what a gifted photographer we have in the area as well!!!
